Pancake Syrups - aka fake maple syrups made with harmful additives
Pancake syrups might have mislead consumers the most. Thinking about it, what the heck does “pancake” or “table” syrup even mean? We know that it does not mean actual maple syrup, the one that comes from maple trees. Instead these brands have put together a disgusting mesh of synthetic colors, additives and preservatives to come up with their “pancake syrups.” These unhealthy additives include caramel color - which gives these fake syrups their “rich” color, Sodium Hexametaphosphate - a thickner used in these syrups but also paints and other construction materials (!) and of course added modified sugars - regular & high fructose corn syrup.
The quality of what we put inside our bodies on a regular basis matters. The toxic ingredients in the below pancake syrup brands - Mrs. Butterworth’s, Log Cabin and Aunt Jemima - have been linked with obesity, precursors to cancer and skin irritations to name a few. Authentic maple syrup does not need any of these harmful additives as it has only one ingredient — pure maple syrup from the sap of trees — which is already divinely sweet.
Not only that, pure maple syrup actually has nutrients like riboflavin, zinc, magnesium, calcium and potassium. And the natural sugar in them is more efficiently absorbed and used by our bodies as well! Remember, if the ‘pancake’ or ‘table’ syrup is actually a mixture of toxic additives, the syrup being vegan, gluten free or low-calorie does NOT make it a healthy or smart breakfast choice.
Let’s now dive into these unhealthy pancake syrup brands and understand why we need to avoid them.
Mrs. Butterworth’s touts being “deliciously thick and rich” without clarifying it’s actually thick and rich in additives and artificial flavors. These processed chemicals & harmful ingredients have been linked with cancer and skin irritations. Mrs. Butterworth’s also contains 0% real maple syrup.
